Installation Guide
Install N8N Insider Chrome extension in under 5 minutes.
Prerequisites
- Google Chrome browser (version 88 or higher)
- An n8n instance (cloud or self-hosted)
- An OpenRouter API key (for AI features)
Step 1: Download the Extension
- Go to the download page
- Click the "Download" button to get the .zip file
- Save the file to your computer
Step 2: Extract the Files
- Locate the downloaded .zip file
- Extract/unzip the contents to a permanent folder
- Remember this location - you'll need it for the next step
Tip: Choose a location you won't accidentally delete, such as ~/Extensions/n8n-insider
Step 3: Open Chrome Extensions
- Open Google Chrome
- Type
chrome://extensionsin the address bar - Press Enter to open the Extensions page
Step 4: Enable Developer Mode
- Look for the "Developer mode" toggle in the top-right corner
- Click the toggle to enable Developer mode
- You should see additional options appear: "Load unpacked", "Pack extension", and "Update"
Step 5: Load the Extension
- Click the "Load unpacked" button
- Navigate to the folder where you extracted the extension
- Select the folder and click "Open" or "Select Folder"
- The N8N Insider extension should now appear in your extensions list
Step 6: Pin the Extension
- Click the puzzle piece icon in Chrome's toolbar (Extensions menu)
- Find "N8N Insider" in the list
- Click the pin icon next to it to keep it visible in your toolbar
Installation Complete!
N8N Insider is now installed. Continue to the Quick Start guide to configure your API keys and start using the extension.
Updating the Extension
To update N8N Insider to a newer version:
- Download the latest version from the download page
- Extract the new files to the same folder (replacing old files)
- Go to
chrome://extensions - Find N8N Insider and click the refresh/reload icon
Troubleshooting
Extension not loading?
Make sure you selected the folder containing the manifest.json file, not a parent folder.
Errors in the extension?
Click "Errors" on the extension card in chrome://extensions to see detailed error messages.
